Saint Elizabeth was the wife of Saint Zachary, a priest of the Old Covenant, and both were "well approved in God's sight, following all the commandments and observances of the Law"-but nonetheless childless into their old age. In fulfillment of an angelic vision to Saint Zechariah prophesying the birth of a son, Saint Elizabeth was with child.

When the Virgin Mary, also with child, visited her kinswoman Saint Elizabeth, the child in her womb leapt in joy at the presence of the Savior and Saint Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost and greeted the Virgin as blessed among women. In our icon she holds a scroll quoting the Psalmist: "Praise ye the Lord Who maketh the barren woman to be a joyful mother." She is the patron of barren women and the pro-life movement.
