A zealous persecutor of the Christians who assisted at the stoning of Saint Stephen the Proto-martyr, Saul of Tarsus was struck from his horse by a light from heaven and heard a voice which said: "Why do you persecute Me?" Blind for three days, he awoke from this condition a new creature in Christ, and was later known as Paul.
The holy Apostle carried the Gospel to the uttermost limits of the world, enduring great trials and hardships and finally consecrating Rome with his martyr's blood. He left fourteen Epistles.
