Pope Francis' Revolution of Tenderness and Love
Pope Francis' Revolution of Tenderness and Love
In Pope Francis’ Revolution of Tenderness and Love, Cardinal Walter Kasper, who has been referred to as “the pope’s theologian,” considers the importance of Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis’ 2013 apostolic exhortation that tackles the problem of the Church and the modern world at its core. According to Cardinal Kasper, the book is not about assessments of church politics, nor does it contain biographical details, anecdotes, and stories, and certainly no gossip, real or imagined, about what happens behind the walls of the Vatican. All this may be interesting, but does not give insight into the essence of Pope Francis. Cardinal Kasper explains the phenomenon of Francis, his approach to theology and his theological background, and elucidates the theological content of his pontificate and the new prospects that this pontificate opens up. Both positive and critical assessments are in danger of trivializing the pontificate: making the Pope a kind of star as opposed to looking at him as a theological lightweight.
