A Small Nativity

This delightful retelling of the Christmas story in a contemporary Latin American setting is by Aquiles Nazoa, one of the most famous poets of Venezuela. Ana Palmero Caceres, a young Venezuelan artist and designer, has enriched the text with marvelous, densely symbolic paintings presented as a series of altarpieces adorned with gold leaf. She uses decorative symbols as well as flora and fauna native to the Americas to tell the story of humble Mary and Joseph seeking a place for the birth of their child. This version of the Nativity speaks to a dual heritage, simultaneously reminding us of a medieval manuscript and of the rich, natural and symbolic culture of the Americas.
